Saddleback Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium)

Saddleback Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium)

Add a splash of elegance to your reef or fish-only aquarium with the Saddleback Butterflyfish. Recognized by its bold black “saddle” marking across its back, this species stands out with vibrant yellow fins, silver body tones, and flowing filament extensions from its dorsal fin.

Native to the Indo-Pacific, the Saddleback Butterflyfish is a hardy and active swimmer that does best in large aquariums (125+ gallons) with plenty of live rock for grazing and open water for movement. This species is generally peaceful with other fish but may nip at coral polyps, anemones, or certain inverts, making it better suited for a fish-only with live rock (FOWLR) system.

Key Features:

  • Striking coloration with a signature black “saddle” marking 🐟

  • Best kept in large aquariums (125+ gallons)

  • Peaceful temperament but not fully reef-safe

  • Active swimmer and attention-grabber in any tank

  • Diet: Omnivorous – enjoys meaty foods, algae, and frozen preparations

Care Level: Moderate
Reef Compatibility: Not recommended (may nip corals)
Temperament: Peaceful
Origin: Indo-Pacific

Bring home the Saddleback Butterflyfish and enjoy a centerpiece species that adds movement, color, and personality to your aquarium.
