Macroalgae, Plants, and Sponges

Macroalgae like Chaeto and Gracilaria are fantastic natural filters that soak up excess nutrients like nitrate and phosphate. They’re perfect for refugiums, but many hobbyists also display them in the main tank for their color and texture. Sponges are another underrated addition—they help filter the water and add a ton of biodiversity to your system. Both are super low-maintenance and don’t require feeding. Just make sure sponges never touch air, or they can die off quickly. If you're looking for a natural way to improve water quality while adding beauty, macroalgae and sponges are an excellent choice.
